C-ISAM, DISAM96 & Flat Files Unix and Windows

Redevelop or Leverage?

Traditional database applications centred on Indexed Sequential Access Method or Host Serial or Flat files have in the past been difficult to integrate into other systems and desktop applications. In many cases, applications have been running successfully for several years, and have frequently been implemented in 3GL computer languages such as COBOL and 'C' or Fortran using character based interfaces. Additionally, some 4GL's such as the Cognos's Powerhouse or PROIV Technology's PROIV incorporate C-ISAM files in their Unix implementations. Frequently these applications have been provided as stand-alone packages from software companies specialising in vertical markets.  The dilemma for the supplier is the that the application can be very efficient and cost effective, but can look old fashioned and be hard to sell to new customers; and existing clients may want to integrate and exchange the data more freely using contemporary office software, or want a graphical user interface or an Internet or Intranet gateway to parts of the application.
Redevelopment is generally costly, risky, and often unsatisfactory, particularly when the main aim is to make the application look and act in a contemporary way.
Our approach is to allow developers and users to leverage the knowledge and expertise they already have, while at the same time to be able to take advantage of powerful ODBC enabled desktop applications and browser based technology.
We supply a range of character and graphical based software tools which will assist in the following ways:
  • Data Manipulation and Analysis: add/delete/resize fields, create new files, sets or reselections, patch data, import/export data  or
  • Create new Browser based functionality without a web server
  • Integration into ODBC enabled desktop applications  (Schema's required using 's Data Definition Language)
